CBD Oil for Tremors
Patients who suffer with essential tremor are often prescribed a number of anti-seizure and tranquilizing medications, which tend to come with numerous side effects. As such, using CBD oil for tremors has recently become of interest to many scientists. Whilst it appears that human studies specifically relating to essential tremor and how it is influenced by cannabidiol (CBD) are still limited, there is a large body of scientific evidence that suggests that CBD may be beneficial in easing the severity of tremors.
What is Essential Tremor (ET)?
Essential tremor is a neurological disorder that causes involuntary, rhythmic shaking in patients. Most commonly the trembling occurs in the hands of the person, but it can affect any part of the body. Essential tremor is thought to be the result of a genetic mutation- often referred to as a familial tremor- in at least half of people with the condition. For those that do not have a known genetic mutation, it is unclear what causes the condition.
Essential tremor is sometimes confused with Parkinson’s disease, but there are some key differences between the two conditions. Essential tremor often affects the hands (most often when using the hands), head and voice, whereas Parkinson’s disease typically affects the hands at rest, the chin, legs, and other parts of the body. Essential tremor is also not generally associated with other health conditions, whereas Parkinson’s disease usually is.
CBD oil for tremors may be a beneficial treatment easing involuntary muscle movements.
What does the current science say about CBD oil for tremors?
Given that abnormal signals move in different ways through each individual’s brain, it is very plausible that different substances (including CBD oil) will affect different people with essential tremor in different ways. CBD oil interacts with the receptors in the body that are responsible for muscle movement, relaxing the muscles, reducing inflammation and easing the symptoms of tremors. Studies have concluded that CBD acts as a neuroprotectant.
A quick internet search reveals numerous personal experiences (anecdotal evidence) from patients describing vast improvements in their condition following use of CBD oil for tremors.
A number of studies have been conducted specifically relating to CBD oil for tremors, in animal models. These studies have shown hopeful, but mixed results thus far. An issue with applying the results of the current scientific literature is that essential tremor is not the result of one problem, but rather a ‘family’ of brain abnormalities; animal models have generally involved inducing tremors in the subjects using chemical substances, rather than the tremors naturally occurring in the brain (as happens with essential tremor). Therefore, it cannot be fully concluded how CBD helps in reducing tremors in these cases.
So far, cannabidiol has been described as safe, and it seems that it has very few (even rare) side effects, making CBD oil for tremors a good prospective treatment. CBD offers users many other potential health benefits too, including improved sleep, reduced anxiety and reduced inflammatory pain. As such, it is an appealing option for a the treatment of essential tremor.
